What to do if you are a singer and have a sore throat?

Hey Talented!

This week’s post is perfect for those singers who are panicking because they are a singer and have a sore throat and don’t know what to do!

Do you have an upcoming audition?

Or is a very important gig lurking around the corner?

Or maybe you are not able to get in the practice you need to keep your voice in tip-top shape because of that pesky cold that just won’t budge!

Unfortunately if you are a singer, having a sore throat is a much bigger deal to you then it is to everyone else around you.

You voice is your instrument, your everything, and when it is not at it’s best it can cause all sorts of stress.

If you are experiencing a sore throat from a cold or virus that just wont budge, then there are certain things you should avoid when it comes to cold and flu medicines.

The following excerpt was taken form the Talentworx Studios 10 Weeks of Techniques course:

…. if you do happen too get a sore throat before a show, stay away from cough lollies and medicine with Menthol in them, as they will dry out your vocal folds.

Have hot water with honey and lemon instead, the lemon will disinfect your throat and the honey will coat and soothe it.

Yep, it’s that simple! Menthol dries out the vocal folds even more and that is the last thing a singer needs.

So go with the old home remedy instead, here is a great recipe:

  1. Boil 250ml of water
  2. Add a big squeeze of lemon juice from 1 whole fresh lemon, or 2 tablespoons of lemon juice from a bottle.
  3. Add as much honey that suits your taste. (1 tablespoon or more is recommended)
  4. Allow to cool right down before drinking.

And the best thing about this type of medicine is that you can have as much as you like!

Now unfortunately, you wont instantly be better and be able to sing on the spot,  it really depends of the severity of your cold as to whether or not you can resume singing safely again.

However, it will help you to mend sooner and give you some temporary relief using natural means.

And of course you can always learn more by taking part in an online technique course like my 10 WEEKS OF TECHNIQUES FOR SINGERS E-COURSE! To check out our SPECIAL BIRTHDAY PRICE click here… but hurry as this offer ends at the end of October 2013.
